Don’t install a cheap 50-amp outlet to charge your EV

Everyone,
If you read my previous article on 50-amp outlets burning up on Level-2 EV chargers, then you know I’m worried about the flurry of home and campground Level-2 EV charger installations. You can re-read my article on Light-Duty 50-amp outlet meltdown HERE.

Here’s the Hubbell EV Grade 50-amp Receptacle
Don’t expect it to be flying off the shelf at $88.63 each. It ain’t cheap, but it’s the best 14-50 receptacle on the market! So is it worth the price? If you’re installing a Level-2 EV charger at your house, then I think it’s the safest way to go and well worth the money. But nobody really needs (or can afford one) for RV shore power. If you’re installing an EV charger can buy one HERE.

Let’s play (and plug) safe out there… Mike

Had a Thought. Local Power Company in Florida is offering to install and maintain an EV level 2 charging station in my garage for $37/Month. Sounds silly until you read a little deeper and find out that it includes UNLIMITED CHARGING FROM 9PM to 7AM!. Here is my thought. Buy a used EV battery. (or the whole EV) Put it in your garage and charge it at night. Buy a bug invertor and run your house on it all day. Presto! $37/month electric bill for life! I never use more that 50KWH/day and that’s in July in Florida. My average usage is about 35KWH/day. What do you think Mike?
That’s an interesting idea that just might work as long as their contract allows it. Essentially you want a Powerwall battery and a 7kW to 12kW 120/240-volt inverter to power your house. You’re using off-peak electricity which is why they’re offering a great discount. Keep me apprised on what you find out.
